A Birthday Story

On Tuesday evening, September 24, 2024, four-time Women’s World Chess Champion and PKU Professor 侯逸凡 (Hóu Yìfán) joined over a thousand of students of the 首都医科大学 (Capital Medical University) in 北京 (Běijīng) for the opening ceremony of the celebrations of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, which finally culminated in a youth mini marathon.

侯逸凡 (Hóu Yìfán) was so kind to share some of his knowledge with the students. "In chess, the situation on the board change all the time, and every move must be carefully considered“, she said. “It requires both strategy and patience, as well as concentration, willpower, and nervous coolness”. She also gave a heartfelt advice to her young audience: “The most difficult moment is often the starting point of a breakthrough”. Photos: 冯恺 (Féng Kǎi), 陈彦芃 (Chén Yànpéng), 许璐 (Xǔ Lù).
