Prato, January 9, 10:33.41

Plants from silken soft to bushy branching ones
animals from furry to scaly
houses from rough hair-tents to concrete buildings
machines from airplanes to electric shavers
and also the seas and the water in a glass
and the starsand the sleeping mountains
and the human being mingled with everything everywhere
                        that’s sweat on the brow
                        lies in the books
                        truth lies
                        friend foe
                        longing joy sorrow
I passed through the crowdw
with the crowd that was passing through.

Nâzım Hikmet, August 14, 1959
English translation by Nilüfer Mizanoğlu Reddy
