侯逸凡 (Hóu Yìfán) – Alina l’Ami
Sharjah; September 6, 2014
Vienna Game C26

Notes by Dylan Loeb McClain, The New York Times, September 13, 2014

In the last round, Hóu, who was White, started with the Vienna Opening, which is rare because it does not pressure Black. L’Ami’s sensible moves in the opening earned her a good position, but she underestimated the latent power in the arrangement of Hóu’s pieces and attacked the center too soon.

1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. g3 Nc6 4. Bg2 Bc5 5. Nge2 0-0 6. 0-0 a6 7. h3 d6 8. Kh2 Ne8 9. d3 f5 10. f4 fxe4 11. Nxe4 Bb6 12. N2c3. L’Ami’s 12. ... d5 was a mistake. She should have played 12 ... h6 to keep Hóu’s pieces, particularly her Knight, away from the Kingside. 13. Ng5 Nf6 14. fxe5 Nxe5 15. d4 Ng6

With 16. Rxf6, Hóu removed a vital piece defending l’Ami’s King. 16. ... Rxf6 17. Qh5 c6 18. Qxh7+ Kf8. But with 19. Nf3, Hóu slightly misplayed her own attack. 19. Ne2 would have been better. 19. ... Bc7 20. Ne2 Qe8 21. Bg5 Rf5 22. Re1 Qf7 23. Bd2. L’Ami tripped up again with 23. ... Rxf3, when she should have played 23 ... Qf6. 24. Bb4+ Ne7. She resigned after 25. Qh8+ because she would have been down too much material after 25 ... Qg8 26 Bxe7+ Kf7 27 Qxg8+ Kxg8 28 Bxf3. 1 : 0.
