There were American sanctions during the Ukraine crisis even against the Russian billionaire and chess sponsor Gennady Nikolayevich Timchenko and the governor of the Krasnodar Krai, Alexander Nikolayevich Tkachyov, who headed the organizing committee for the last World Chess Championship. But the two don’t have any function in the FIDE anymore. If 53-year-old Russian Ilyumzhinov gives up his mandate and there will be new elections, his opponent Garry Kimovich Kasparov would incidentally not entitled to stand as a candidate: against former World Chess Champion, in fact, the FIDE Ethics Commission has imposed a two-year ban for corruption.
