The International Chess Day was celebrated today at the Central House of Culture of the Railway Workers in Moscow, Russia. The feast day, especially dedicated to youngsters and entitled “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”, was attended by 10th World Chess Champion Boris Vasilievich Spassky, FIDE President Kirsan Nikolayevich Ilyumzhinov, Russian Chess Federation President Andrey Vasilievich Filatov, and many others Moscow’s dignitaries and intellectuals. Here, at the time of the most terrible war in human history, 13th USSR Chess Championship was held in 1944. In spite of the fact that the attention of the whole country and the whole world was riveted on the war front, in Moscow as well as in other Russian cities, chess competitions never ceased to be held. Today we celebrate our feast, and here is 10th World Chess Champion Boris Vasilievich Spassky, who in this building won one of his many USSR Chess Championship titles. Once again, I wish to congratulate everyone for celebrating with us the International Chess Day, wishing you uncompromising confrontations and success, not only over the board, but in all situations”.
