The Salt Road

Miners work in solar temperatures of up to 60C heat (140F) to carve out salt blocks in the Afar Triangle in the Great Rift Valley of Ethiopia. Photo: Joel Santos/Barcroft Images.

About 2,000 camels pass through the Afar desert (stretching for 38,000 sq miles) every day, transporting salt. No wonder that sometimes they have to take a break. Photo: Joel Santos/Barcroft Images.
