Sporting a long beard, 11th World Chess Champion Robert James “Bobby” Fischer walked free from a Japanese detention center on Thursday, March 24, 2005 and immediately headed to the airport to fly to his new home – Iceland – following a nine-month standoff with Tokyo officials trying to deport him to the United States.
