It’s almost a rule — when a corrupt empire falls, all the servants and pretorians of the falling emperor are eager to betray him. An army of corrupt administrators, a court of lackeys, and a people of greedy mercenaries. And even his “authorised” opposers are worth his henchmen — never forget, gens una sunt.
