Astronomers have captured the first-ever photo of a supermassive black hole big enough to swallow whole stars at the centre of a distant galaxy. The image of the colossal black hole at the core of the Messier 87 galaxy was obtained by combining eight radio dishes around the world into one global telescope — the so-called Event Horizon Telescope (EHT).
