People protest in New York City against ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement), the famed federal agency which last Wednesday raided food processing plants across Mississippi, targeting migrants and summarily arresting hundreds of supposedly unauthorised workers, in what has been boasted as the biggest single-day one-state roundup in U.S. history. If nothing else, Kevin McAleenan, acting secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), had to admit that “the timing [of the raids] was unfortunate”, just days after two racist mass shootings in Ohio and Texas — in which over 30 people were killed.
