Four-time Women’s World Chess Champion and Rhodes Scholar 侯逸凡 (Hóu Yìfán) chats with the coaching staff of Impact Coaching Network (ICN) before taking the stage of Her Move Next on the evening of Monday, August 12, 2019 in New York, United States. While such initiatives are aimed at increasing the number of girls and women playing chess, it’s worth noting that the gender gap in chess does not depend only upon numbers, but far more on cultural and environmental realities governed by transnational sports organisations that are not necessarily (or at all) interested in developing and caring for artistic and intellectual professions, which, among other inconveniences, does not favour the social construction of gender equality either.
