Pio d’Emilia, Southeast Asia correspondent for il manifesto, L’Espresso and Sky TG24, has died today in Tokyo at the age of 68. It was d’Emilia who, in the early 2000s, together with Serbian journalist John Bosnitch, rescued and saved 11th World Chess Champion Bobby Fischer from a long detention in Japan and the “inevitable” extradition to the U.S. For the interested readers, we refer to his article for il manifesto of March 24, 2005. Pictured above, right to left, are Fischer, finally free, d’Emilia and Bosnitch on top of their mission impossible. Photo: Pio d’Emilia. |
