After months of absence, last October 30, 17th World Chess Champion 丁立人 (Dīng Lìrén) reappeared on public television as a commentator at the 5th China National Mind Games, so as to reassure his fans at home and abroad that any rumours of his death have been greatly exaggerated. And yet, through an e-mail to a commercial web site, 丁立人 (Dīng Lìrén) himself would have confirmed that he had been suffering with a disease — without providing any further details — from which he hopes to recover in time to join the field of the 86th Tata Steel Chess Tournament, scheduled on January 12–28, 2024.
