French Defence C18

1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 Bb4 4. e5 c5 5. a3 Bxc3+ 6. bxc3 Ne7 7. Qg4 Qc7 8. Bd3 Qa5 9. Bd2 c4 10. Be2 Rg8 11. a4 Nbc6 12. Qh3 (12. Qh5 h6 13. Bg4 Bd7 14. Ne2 Rf8 15. Nf4 0-0-0 16. Qh3 Kb8 17. Nh5 Rg8 18. Qe3 Nc8 19. Bc1 Nb6 20. Ba3 Nxa4 21. Kd2 Ka8 22. Bd6 ½–½ Dardha – Livaić, 31st Croatian Team Chess Championship, Veli Lošinj 2023)
12. ... h6 13. Bh5 Bd7 14. Ne2 g6 15. Bg4 h5 16. Bf3 Nf5 17. g4 hxg4 18. Bxg4 0-0-0 19. Bxf5 exf5 20. Bg5 Rde8 21. Kd2 Rh8 22. Qf3 Nd8 23. Bf6 Rh6 24. h4 Ne6 25. h5

25. ... g5!⇄ 26. Rae1 (26. Qxf5?? Nxd4−+)
26. ... f4? Too much hurry. He should have played something like 26... a6!, leaving the ... g5-g4 advance into the picture.
27. Reg1! Rg8!? Black will end up overwhelmed by the flood of wild sacs from his opponent, but he can console himself with the fact that there was nothing particularly better.
28. Nxf4! Rxf6 29. exf6 Nxf4

30. h6! 30. Qxf4! is the solution favoured by the engines, as after 30. ... gxf4 31. Rxg8+ Kc7 32. Rg7 Qxa4 33. h6 Bf5 34. Rxf7+ Kd6 35. Rc1 Black is finished. Instead, Carlsen does it his way and his way, by the way, is quite spectacular.
30. ... Ne6 31. h7 Rh8 32. Qe3 Qd8

33. Rxg5! Nxg5 (33. ... Qxf6?? 34. Rg8+ Kc7 35. Rh6+−)
34. Qxg5 Kc7 35. Qg7 Be6 36. Re1? Bad timing. However, a more exact way of carrying out the same plan as in the game is 36. f4! Kb6 37. Rh5! with a paralysing bind.
36. ... Kb6? But Rapport misses his only chance to save the day: 36. ... Bf5! 37. Qxf7+ Kc6 38. Rg1 Rxh7 39. Rg7 Rxg7 40. Qxg7 (or 40. fxg7 Qg5+ 41. Ke2 Bh7=) 40. ... Qd6 41. f7 Qf4+ 42. Ke1 Bxc2! 43. Kf1 (but not 43. f8=Q?? because of 43. ... Qc1+ 44. Ke2 Bd1+ followed by mate) 43. ... Bd3+ 44. Kg1 Qc1+ 45. Kh2 Qf4+ with a draw by perpetual check.
37. Re5! Qc8 38. f4! Now everything is again in Carlsen’s hands.
38. ... a6 39. Kc1 Ka7 40. f5 Bd7 41. a5 Qf8 42. Kb2! Systematically and mercilessly.
42. ... Qc8 43. Rxd5 Bc6 44. Re5 Bd7 45. Qxf7 Bxf5 46. Rc5 Qe6 47. Qxe6 Bxe6 48. Rc7 Bf5 49. Rg7! All was perfectly calculated.
49. ... Bxh7 50. f7! Bd3!? 51. cxd3! 1–0
