It’s not certain, however, whether Nakamura would have resigned himself to it after 24. ... Nf4. We guess so, since the same move as in the text 25. Ra3 would be met by the strong rejoinder 25. ... d5! (Deviatkin’s analysis).

25. Ra3! The following elegant Rook maneuver accentuates the weakness of the Black Queenside Pawns. 25. ... Nf4 26. Rb3! Rc6 27. Ne2! Getting rid of the annoying Black Knight. 27. ... Nxe2 28. Bxe2 Rdc8. If 28. ... Bxe3 then 29. Bxe3 Rxc2 30. Rxb6 and White stands much better. 29. c3 Nd7 30. Nc2 d5. Black is too impatient in his attempt to use tactics to solve his problems. Grandmaster Alejandro Tadeo Ramírez Álvarez suggests 30. ... Nc5 31. Ra3 R6c7 as “perhaps slightly favorable for White but still anyone’s game”. 31. Nb4! Rc5 32. exd5. “Suddenly there is no good way of recapturing on d5. It is unclear to me what Topalov had planned, as 31. Nb4 was quite obvious”, Ramírez Álvarez writes. 32. ... Ra5 33.
