Former Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Vladimirovich Dvorkovich was elected President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) during the 89th FIDE Congress in Batumi, Georgia on Wednesday, October 3, 2018.
Dvorkovich was elected in a three-way runoff after British Grandmaster Nigel Short broke the impasse by withdrawing his candidacy in extremis. Dvorkovich then defeated the only remaining candidate, current FIDE Deputy President Georgios Makropoulos of Greece, by 103 votes to 78. One vote was declared invalid.
