Black Pawn

The Women’s World Chess Championship Knockout Tournament started with a sober opening ceremony held in the Concert and Theatre Centre “Ugra-Classic” in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia on Friday, November 2, 2018. Russian President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin indirectly took part in it by delivering a message of encouragement and greetings to all participants, which was read by Chief Federal Inspector of Ugra Dmitry Kuzmenko. FIDE President Arkady Vladimirovich Dvorkovich also attended the ceremony, officially reiterating that women’s and men’s World Chess Championship systems will be equated in the next cycle already. 17th Women’s World Chess Champion 居文君 (Jū Wénjūn) — who is at risk to go down in history as the shortest time Chess Queen ever — appeared on stage for the drawing of lots. She picked up a Black Pawn, that’s means that the players with odd starting numbers will play their first round game with Black. Only time will tell, perhaps, whether it has been luck or not.
