Lower than Low

Mariya Olehivna Muzychuk’s rating zero

A bit of World War II within a few hours of new World Order. Former Women’s World Chess Champion Mariya Olehivna Muzychuk, after having lost the crown a month ago, has temporarily lost also her rating, as a “collateral damage” of the insolvency of Ukraine in respect of the Women’s World Chess Championship match in Lviv. All Ukrainian players will share her fate, as a reprisal for the risk of default on the Ukrainian debt. Idem to say that Muzychuk is now “hostage” to the World Chess Federation. Apparently she will be “released” only after the Ukrainian Chess Federation paid the debt. If nothing else, on the other side of the Moon, Women’s World Chess Champion 侯逸凡 (Hóu Yìfán) managed to escape just in time, even though with empty pockets.
At the moment, however, it would seem confirmed Muzychuk sisters’ participation in the the third stage of Women’s Grand Prix in Batumi, Georgia, and, curiously enough, “ECU will allow Ukrainian players who registered before this decision to play the European Championships in May”, says European Chess Union’s Management Secretary Τheo. Tsorbatzoglou.
The situation is not easy, because nobody wants to pay. On the other hand, nobody likes to pay for being kicked out of his own house.
We cannot but appeal to the inclination to forgiveness always shown by Russian people, who paid such a high price in the victory against nazi-fascism in the Second World War, and hope they can come to a “gentlemen agreement” in both sides’ interests.
Gens una sumus.
