In concomitance with his visit to the “Sirius” Educational Centre for gifted children in Sochi, Russia, Russian President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin (first on the centre) attended the exhibits “War and Chess” and “Chess and Music”. “Chess survived and helped people to survive the Great Patriotic War. Yesterday we celebrated the 71st Anniversary of Victory, but in 1942, when the Battle of Stalingrad had only just begun, a chess tournament was held in Moscow. It’s just amazing, stunning, and almost inimaginable; yet so it was. People kept playing chess even in besieged Leningrad”, Putin said in his speech.
