The Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE) has just published the list of players eligible for the 64-player Knockout Women’s World Chess Championship Tournament due to be held in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia from November 1–24, 2018. Finally, this could be the last time in which the Women’s World Champion will be crowned through the knockout system format, that objectively has the demerit of electing “expiring Queens” just for the benefit of the cashier. Russian candidate for the post of FIDE President, Arkady Vladimirovich Dvorkovich, has raised the urgency of equating women’s and men’s World Chess Championship systems and formats as soon as this cycle has ended. It’s not too soon and it won’t be that easy either; but thus far he was the only one to take a clear position in regard of it.
