The 1938 racial laws barring Jewish people from public life are an “indelible stain” on Italy’s history that must never be repeated, President of Italy Sergio Mattarella said Thursday ahead of Holocaust Remembrance Day on Saturday. “The racial laws represent a dark chapter, an indelible stain, an infamous page in our history”, he said at a ceremony at the Quirinal Palace.
In a decree issued last Friday, Mattarella himself, on the basis of article 59 of the Italian Constitution, appointed Liliana Segre, 87 – one of the few Italian Jews who survived Auschwitz – as Senator for Life for very high merits in the social field. |
