After a six-year collaboration, Fabiano Caruana and his second Rustam Mashrukovich Kasimdzhanov terminated their professional relationship by a “gentlemen’s agreement” which Kasimdzhanov himself, in an interview to the ChessBase web site, did not hesitate to call “like a divorce”. Kasimdzhanov had survived Caruana’s lost World Championship match against Magnus Carlsen in 2018, but apparently the subsequent failure in the Candidates Tournament 2020–21 — a pandemic odyssey — has proved too great a disappointment for Fabiano’s parents.
