Queen’s Gambit Declined D58

1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nf3 Nf6 4. Nc3 Be7 5. Bg5 0-0 6. e3 h6 7. Bh4 b6 8. Rc1 Bb7 9. Be2 dxc4 10. Bxc4 Nbd7 11. 0-0 c5 12. Qe2 Rc8!? Black’s move — probably a new one — seems to be playable, after all. The “old vintage” theory says 12. ... Ne4 13. Nxe4 Bxh4 (13. ... Bxe4 14. Bg3!±) 14. Nc3! Bf6 15. Rfd1 Qe7 16. Ba6 Rab8 17. Bxb7 Rxb7 18. Ne4! cxd4 19. exd4 Rd8 20. Qa6! Nb8 21. Nxf6+ gxf6 22. Qe2± Alekhine – Bogoljubov, Quadrangolar Tournament, Bad Nauheim 1937. But, as Alekhine himself suggested in his notes, 12. ... a6 might have offered more opportunities for Black to equalise. 13. Rfd1

13. ... cxd4? This is Black’s real mistake. Consistent was 13. ... Bxf3! 14. gxf3 (14. Qxf3 cxd4 15. Rxd4 Rxc4! 16. Rxc4 Ne5=) 14. ... cxd4 15. Rxd4 Nd5 16. Bg3 Bf6 with reasonable chances for equality. 14. Nxd4 Qe8?? A second consecutive error with catastrophic consequences. After 14. ... Nd5 15. Bg3 White stands much better, but somehow the game goes on.

15. Bb5. Threatens Bg5xf6 followed by Nd4xe6. 15. ... Rc7 16. Bxf6 Bxf6 17. Nd5! Simple like that. 17. ... Rxc1 18. Nxf6+ gxf6 19. Rxc1 Qd8 20. Qg4+. The engines like 20. Rd1 which wins material by force. Instead Gunina seeks her solace in more human pleasures. 20. ... Kh8 (20. ... Kh7 21. Bd3+ f5 22. Nxf5 exf5 23. Bxf5+ Kh8 24. Bxd7+−) 21. Qf4 Kg7

22. Rc7! A crushing penetration. Unfortunately for her, Black cannot play either 22. ... Ne5?? (23. Nxe6++−) nor, of course, 22. ... e5?? on account of 23. Nf5+ followed by mate in two. 22. ... Bc8 (22. ... Nc5 23. b4 Qd5 24. f3+−) 23. Nc6 Qe8 24. Nxa7 1 : 0.
