Shown above are three screenshots from a grainy, low-quality video footage of Bobby Fischer’s visit to Belgrade, Yugoslavia, in October 1978, which was his almost first public appearance, after he had lived for six years obscurely in his basement at Pasadena, California, United States. On Friday, October 20, 1978, an AP wire story regarding a possible Fischer’s comeback broke worldwide as he flew to Yugoslavia to meet Grandmaster Svetozar Gligorić and discuss the possibility of a chess match with him, as well as to back Gligorić’s candidacy for President of FIDE. But alas for Caïssa’s hopes, neither one nor the other was the choice of the chess world. Photos via Baron Rich. |
