Daisy Osakue (pictured above) finished 5th (with a personal best of 59.32) in the women’s discus throw final at the 24th European Athletics Championships in Berlin, Germany on August 11, 2018. At the end, she wanted to celebrate her achievement wearing the Italian flag around her shoulders, in a powerful symbolic act welcomed by all her fans. “The final was a dream already”, she told Rai Sport, “and I seized it. I finished 5th among the first 8, and, although I was hoping to set my personal record, the result makes me quite happy. I have to improve on my ability to control my energy. Now I just want to go home and train. I will never forget Berlin, it’s been my springboard”. Photo © AFP.

Giovanni Malagò, President of the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI), said that Daisy Osakue – the black Italian athlete injuried in an alleged racial attack last Monday – might not be able to take part in the 24th European Athletics Championships. “She will be treated with a massive dose of cortisone, and it is apparently too much to request a Therapeutic Use Exemption. What’s happened is an extremely grave fact”, Malagò said.

The Importance of Not Being Arcovazzi
Black Italian athlete Daisy Osakue was injured early on Monday in Turin, Italy when unidentified assailants hurled an egg at her face. “I don’t want to play the sexism or racism card, but people should be able to go out without someone attacking you out of the blue”, Osakue said, wearing a patch over her eye. Doctors said Daisy, whose parents are Nigerian, should recover in time to take part in the 24th European Athletics Championships in Berlin, Germany next month where she is due to represent Italy in the discus throw.
