At least 10,000 people rallied in downtown Florence on Saturday in memory of Idy Diène, 54, the Senegalese street vendor who was shooted dead in a “random” racist rampage on Ponte Amerigo Vespucci last Monday. The Senegalese community en masse joined the anti-racist rally also from other Italian cities, prompting the Italian authorities to put a stop to the “tolerance” which they often show at almost every level towards fascists and racists.

The Senegalese community in Florence is organising a national and peaceful rally in memory of Idy Diène, 54, the street vendor who was shooted dead on Ponte Amerigo Vespucci last Monday. The meeting point will be next Saturday at 15,00 everywhere in downtown Florence. Everyone of any race or class or gender is expected to participate.
Incidentally, Idy Diène was the cousin of Modou Samb, another Senegalese street vendor who was shooted dead by an Italian fair right extremist in Florence on December 11, 2011. Samb’s widow, Mrs. Rokhaya Mbengue, remembered that Idy Diene offered much support and help to her family after the tragedy of six years ago. |
Some 500 African migrants and Italians protested in downtown Florence, Italy on Tuesday, chanting “no more racism” and criticizing the anti-migrant Northern League party for incitement to racial hatred after an Italian man shot dead a Senegalese street vendor, Idy Diène, 54, on Ponte Amerigo Vespucci in central Florence (near the U.S. Consulate General) earlier Monday.
It’s not the first time that African vendors get targeted for shooting in Florence. Six years ago, an Italian right-wing extremist shot dead two street vendors and wounded three others in a racist raid. |
