Red Plume

21st Italian Chess Championship, Perugia, August 17-27, 1960. Let’s quote from the L’Italia Scacchistica, No. 9, September 1960, p. 200:

“The 21st Championship was followed and reported by major national and international newspapers: Corriere della Sera, Corriere d’Informazione, l’Unità, Il Messaggero, Il Tempo, La Stampa, Il Giornale del Mattino, La Nazione, Il Quotidiano, La Nouvelle Gazette, Le Matin, Neue Zürcher Zeitung, etc. Some of these newspapers reported, day by day, the news and results of the games, even with four or five column headlines, accompanied by numerous photos. It’s a particular merit of Gian Franco Anastasi, who carefully served as press officer”.

Then a special thank you to Anastasi, Mauro Berni and Rafael Santana for the following anonymous newspaper clipping, which was unearthed from Sandro Sironi’s private archive, and on which there are a few lines about Clarice Benini:

“Florence sent the only woman of the tournament: Miss Benini, hair short with a few gray strands and a cigarette between lips with a hint of red”.
