It’s confirmed: according to the U.S. Treasury, FIDE President Kirsan Nikolayevich Ilyumzhinov was blacklisted for “materially assisting and acting for or on behalf of” the Syrian government and the Central Bank of Syria.
Speaking by phone from Rome, Ilyumzhinov said he has no business operating in Syria and that he’s “surprised” by the decision to blacklist him. He also confirmed he’s planning to visit the U.S. next week for discussing about a possibile World Chess Championship match in the United States next year.
Most likely Mr. Ilyumzhinov is in Rome to attend the 1st FIDE World Online Women’s Blitz Championship that is to be held today at the Circolo Canottieri Aniene. If so, it’s worth reading the PremiumChess Italia’s disclaimer:

Screen grab from Scacchierando.it. That’s a translation: “Organizers recommend for anyone wishing to attend the Final of [today]: firstly, the staff must be informed beforehand via electronic mail (press@premiumchess.net), and, more importantly, suitable mandatory dress code is required”.
