On April 19, 2016, while attending the 35 National Team Gold Medal at the 北京 (Běijīng) National Assembly Resources Available Sports Administration, the four-time Women’s World Chess Champion 侯逸凡 (Hóu Yìfán) answered some questions China Central Television’s host 白岩松 (Bái Yánsōng) put to her. Asked about the not always easy relationship between sponsorship, sports and ethics, she said: “Professionally I am more than happy when I win, but as an athlete I also bear the responsibility of promoting and representing my discipline. We need sponsorship to support sports, provided, however, that the commercial aims of the sponsor may also serve to carry out more public welfare projects devoted to children and youngsters”. Any advice? Yes, she has. “It would be most important to find a balance between the commercial interests of the sponsor and the sporting interests of an individual athlete, working together to safeguard the common good. When and where public welfare prevails over a private good, we catch the very quintessence of sport, and our sun serves and lightens all the world”.
