FIDE President and former President of the Republic of Kalmykia Kirsan Nikolayevich Ilyumzhinov, when he was guest of the NTV talk show “Majority” on last June 24, surprised the audience by stating that Kalmyks are descendants of the Chinese. On his website, he says it even clearer: “Kalmyks are the fifth generation of Chinese”. Asked to support his historical finding, Mr. Ilyumzhinov traced back the migration history to the (long) period of civil wars in Mongolia, when the Oirat tribes, whose leaders had accepted Chinese titles, left the Inner Asian borders of China for arriving, through Mongolia and Siberia, to the western coast of the Caspian Sea.
