Finally, FIDE released a cryptic press release announcing that the extraordinary Presidential Board meeting, held this morning in Athens, Greece has been legally called, and that the Deputy President Georgios Makropoulos is actually the Deputy President of FIDE. Apparently, the Board members also supported Mr. Makropoulos’s exclusive claim of executive power, while Mr. Kirsan Nikolayevich Ilyumzhinov would remain in office as a kind of honorary President or, in the worst case, as Mr. Makropoulos’s figurehead.
What a pity for the Greek junta, however, that Ilyumzhinov’s Executive Assistant Berik Tuktybekovich Balgabaev resolutely denied the “official” version: “The status quo survived. Kirsan Nikolayevich Ilyumzhinov remains FIDE President with no limitation of powers”, he told TASS. Yes, it seems like a very, very “grotesque” show, like a banana republic in which the “putschists” and the “people” gens una sunt, but don’t worry, everything is gonna be alright. |
