The 2023 Women’s World Chess Championship kicked off today with an opening ceremony in the Grand Ballroom of the 上海静安洲际酒店举行 (InterContinental Shànghǎi Jìng’ān Hotel) in 上海 (Shànghǎi), China. 居文君 (Jū Wénjūn), the reigning Women’s World Champion, and her challenger, 雷挺婕 (Léi Tǐngjié), drew lots for the colour and, for the sake of photographers, took up poses around the stage. One dream, two heads, one crown. 居文君 (Jū Wénjūn) aims at equaling what her great predecessor 侯逸凡 (Hóu Yìfán) — who is three years younger than her! — has accomplished, that is, to defend the title four times. In her turn, 雷挺婕 (Léi Tǐngjié), who has all the enthusiasm of her youth, wants the crown as well as the glory. The match will be held, in honour of the two women, half in 上海 (Shànghǎi) and half in 重庆 (Chóngqìng). As it is an all-Chinese cast and produced entirely in China, the screenplay will certainly live up to expectations.
