The newly crowned World Chess Champion 丁立人 (Dīng Lìrén), who at the last moment had already cancelled his participation in the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League, will also be missing from the 10th Chess World Cup, scheduled in Baku, Azerbaijan, from July 30 to August 24, 2023. One might think that he felt overwhelmed by the responsibility of his world title and not yet ready to meet his de facto nemesis, world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen. However, he was quoted by The Guardian columnist Leonard Barden as saying to New In Chess magazine (2023/4): “Argentina wants to organise a rapid and Chess960 match between us [he and Carlsen] at the end of this year. I am interested. Let’s see”.
