Desperately Seeking Jack Dawson

Cooks, actors, and captains

Giorgio Agamben, Quodlibet, November 3, 2025

A quote from Kierkegaard perfectly describes our historical situation: “Be careful. The ship is in the hands of the ship’s cook. And what the commander’s megaphone transmits is no longer the route but what we will eat tomorrow”. Sometimes, it is not the cook who guides the ship, but an actor who, instead of the route, tells us about the play he is performing. In any case, the ship will almost inevitably founder.
