Welcome Home

居文君 (Jū Wénjūn) – 王珏 (Wáng Jué)
“Jolimark Cup” Chinese Chess League Division A; 深圳 (Shēnzhèn), December 4, 2016

1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. g3 Bg7 4. Bg2 0-0 5. Nc3 d6 6. Nf3 Nc6 7. 0-0 a6 8. Bg5 h6 9. Bd2 Rb8 10. d5 Na5 11. b3 c5 12. a4 Qb6!? A new idea, but hardly an improvement over 12. ... e6 13. dxe6 Bxe6 14. 24. ... Rc7? The Knight on a5 is a little misplaced, so 王珏 (Wáng Jué) should have hurried on a rescue mission, even at the cost of a Pawn: 24. ... c4!? 25. b4 Nb3 26. Rxc4 Rxc4 27. Bxc4 Nxd2 28. Nxd2 h5! and Black could hope for a compensation, thanks to the Bishop pair and her volatile initiative on the dark squares. 25. b4! Now White forces the gain of a Pawn under much more favourable circumstances. 居文君 (Jū Wénjūn) will convert her material plus quite routinely, if a little laboriously. 25. ... cxb4 26. Rxc7 Qxc7 27. Qxb4 b6 28. Bxa6 f5 29. exf5 Bxf5 30. Re3 Rf8 31. h3 g5 32. Bd3 Bxd3 33. Rxd3 Qc4 34. Qb5 Qxb5 35. axb5 Nc4 36. Bc3 Ra8 37. Bxg7 Kxg7 38. Rc3 Ra4 39. Nd4 Kf6 40. Nc6 Kf5 41. Rf3+ Ke4 42. Rf6 Kxd5 43. So 上海 (Shànghǎi) won Chinese Chess League with one round yet to go. 居文君 (Jū Wénjūn), who was just back from Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, joined 上海 (Shànghǎi) just in time to contribute to today’s (decisive) win against 北京 (Běijīng) (4–1).

Silence in the Library

沈阳 (Shěn Yáng) – 王珏 (Wáng Jué)

1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. e4 d6 5. Be2 0-0 6. Nf3 e5 7. dxe5 dxe5 8. 0-0 Na6 9. Be3 c6 10. Qxd8 Rxd8 11. Rfd1 Re8 12. h3 Bf8 13. a3 Nc5 14. Nd2 a5 15. b3. For 15. b4 Ne6 16. c5 Nd4 see S. Ernst – van Wely, 76th Dutch Chess Championship, Eindhoven 2010. 15. ... Ne6 16. Na4 Nd7 17. Bg4 Nd4 18. Bxd4? It seems a serious error of judgement. After 18. 26. ... Rd3! The biting dust begins to stung under 沈阳 (Shěn Yáng)’s finger nails. 27. Rxd3. Perhaps 27. bxa5 Rxa3 would have held Black a bit more at bay. 27. ... exd3 28. bxa5 Ra8? 王珏 (Wáng Jué) misses her big chance. After 28. ... d2! (threatening ... Bf7-a2) 29. Nc3 Bxc5 Black’s position appears imposing. 29. Nb2 Bxc5 30. Nxd3 Bxe3 31. fxe3 Rxa5 32. Rxb7 Rxa3. The position is now roughly equal, but they both keep striving hand-to-hand for victory. 33.
