With the successful hosting of the Carlsen – Anand World Championship Match in Sochi, Russia last November and with FIDE running out of options from its usual patrons (read oil-rich Arab states and ex-Soviet countries), it was no surprise that Russia President Vladimir Putin was once again asked to help out.
So in the last few weeks there has been a surge of activity regarding the Women’s World Championship which will be also be held in Sochi from March 16 to April 7, 2015 but no mention has been made of the fact that the defending champion Hóu Yìfán will not be playing. Life at Home
On December 22, 2012 侯逸凡 (Hóu Yìfán) made her guest appearance at the Grand Ballroom Pullman Hotel in Jakarta, Indonesia to attend the last day of the Makita Women Rapid Chess Match between Indonesia and France, and perform a simultaneous exhibition. On occasion, she exchanged some views with the Chief Arbiter Peter Long, which he reported on his blogging site: “[...] we were amazed to learn that 凡 (Yìfán) did not have a personal coach but had to share the national coaches with the rest of the China teams. 凡 (Yìfán) did not get an allowance let alone a salary from the Federation or any other Sports Organisation in China and this was true for all their players! Even the players winnings were taxed”. Photo: Peter Long.
