Andrey Vasilievich Filatov was re-elected President of the Russian Chess Federation (RCF) to a new four-year term, a TASS correspondent on the scene reported. The presidential election was held on Saturday in Moscow. The RCF Presidency was also claimed by the member of the Supervisory Board of the RCF from Ingushetia Zaurbek Sultanovich Malsagov and the leading researcher at the Institute of Economics of the Russian Academy of Sciences Ivan Valentinovich Starikov. 56 people voted for Filatov, 14 for Starikov, and 1 for Malsagov. The President of the Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE) Kirsan Nikolayevich Ilyumzhinov, the former Soviet Champion in ski jumping Eduard Anatolyevich Suboch, and the President of the Moscow Region Chess Federation as well as President of the Rostov Region Chess Federation Sergey Anatolyevich Nesterov withdrew their candidacies before the polls closed. Filatov’s candidature was supported by the Board of Trustees of the Russian Chess Federation and a number of chess players, including 14th World Chess Champion Vladimir Borisovich Kramnik and the challenger for the 2016 World Chess Championship Sergey Alexandrovich Karjakin. Also on Saturday, 10th World Chess Champion Boris Vasilievich Spassky was elected Honorary President of the Russian Chess Federation. Filatov is Vice President of FIDE and senior coach of the men’s Russian chess team. He has been President of the Russian Chess Federation since 2014.

FIDE President Kirsan Nikolayevich Ilyumzhinov withdrew in extremis his candidacy to stand for election of President of the Russian Chess Federation (RCF). “I am grateful to all regional federations which nominated me for the election, but I withdraw my candidacy for concentrating on my international agenda”, Ilyumzhinov told reporters. The election of the new President of the Russian Chess Federation is taking place today (Saturday, February 3) concurrently to the 13th Congress of the RCF in Moscow, Russia. Andrey Vasilievich Filatov, Zaurbek Sultanovich Malsagov, Sergey Anatolyevich Nesterov, Ivan Valentinovich Starikov, Eduard Anatolyevich Suboch now remain the only candidates.

Filatov said he’s not afraid of the competition with Ilyumzhinov. “It’s great that there are such candidates out there. It shows how much attention Russia pays to chess”, he said.
