“Holding Women’s World Chess Championship match in Ukraine is a very symbolic and important event for our city and for the whole country. Personally, I cannot remember when such events ever occurred here. Perhaps this will be the first time in the history of Ukraine”, Women’s World Chess Champion Maria Muzychuk said. “I think that World Chess Federation (FIDE), when considering applications, should take into account the eminent chess school of our city, and the fact that many renowned Grandmasters come from here”.

In an open letter to his Ukrainian friends, Ukrainian Grandmaster Mikhail Golubev has exposed the danger that next Women’s World Chess Championship match – if helded in Ukraine – could be politically instrumentalized by Russia, although – he admitted – “Having the Women’s World Championship match, involving Mariya Muzychuk, in Lviv is probably not a bad idea, if it is self-sustainable”.
“The financing of the match can be split between three sources: 1) a local sponsor; 2) the Ukrainian budget (which would be voted on by the Rada); 3) the Lviv budget (which would be voted on by the city or regional council)”, Ukraine Grandmaster Dimitri Komarov argued. |
