The President of the Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE) and former President of the Republic of Kalmykia, Kirsan Nikolayevich Ilyumzhinov consistently climbed to third place in The Political Officer (Zampolit)’s June list of the Top Ten Russia’s most influential political figures.
Mr. Ilyumzhinov has not only proposed to the deputies of the Duma to play a chess match with their counterparts in the U.S. Congress, but he himself decided to play a “grand game”. He indeed fixed the prizemoney, a figure worth the respect of any multinational corporation: $50 billions dollar – such is his claim for damages and the object of his lawsuit against the U.S. Department of the Treasury.
But it’s not only a matter of money. Mr. Ilyumzhinov also demands public apologies from the U.S. Department of the Treasury for including him in the Specially Designated Nationals List “for materially assisting and acting for or on behalf of the Government of Syria and Central Bank of Syria”.
Mr. Ilyumzhinov finally declared to be ready to invest any money from the lawsuit in the development of chess in the United States, so to revive the ancient spirit of 11th World Chess Champion Robert James “Bobby” Fischer.
