Outer Manchuria

It is with a certain euphoria that Vladivostok is longing to welcome 居文君 (Jū Wénjūn) and Aleksandra Yuryevna Goryachkina and host the second half of their Women’s World Chess Championship match. The first half has just ended in 上海 (Shànghǎi) — the birth city of 居文君 (Jū Wénjūn) — with a perfectly even score of 3–3, which was perceived by the Russian chess community as a prelude to Goryachkina’s final success. Among the many declarations, a particular mention must go to that made today to TASS by 12th World Chess Champion Anatoly Yevgenyevich Karpov, who gave Goryachkina his endorsement: “Sasha has been great. She is well prepared, and in fact, after a shocking defeat in the fourth game, she was able to win back the fifth game”, he said. “Sasha held her own in the first half, and now has got a psychological advantage on her side”. The disparity of forces that could arise on Russky Island is not apparently a matter of concern for anyone — and Karpov also said he’s not convinced — or he pretended not to be — that the “home factor” will bring any particular benefit to Goryachkina, because, after all, chess is a mind game, not a minefield.
