The Chess Federation of Russia has finally announced the names of the twelve participants in the Superfinal of the 76th Russian “unisex” Chess Championship, scheduled in Saint Petersburg from September 30 to October 13, 2023. They are (in alphabetical order): Vladislav Mikhailovich Artemiev, Andrey Evgenyevich Esipenko, Aleksandra Yuryevna Goryachkina, Ekaterina Aleksandrovna Lagno, Maxim Sergeevich Matlakov, Volodar Arturovich Murzin, Evgeniy Yuryevich Najer, Pavel Andreevich Ponkratov, Ivan Mikhailovich Rozum, Klementy Sergeevich Sychev, Artyom Valeryevich Timofeev, and Evgeny Yuryevich Tomashevsky. It will be the first time in Russian and Soviet history that two women will play in what has almost always been, so far, a traditionally male-only contest (Goryachkina having been the only exception).
