Now White castles on the wrong side (and probably at the wrong time), allowing Black to seize the upper hand: 10. 0-0-0? Nc6! 11. dxc5?? Visibly tired, Morricone blundered a piece. 11. ... Bxe5 12. Bh4 Nb4. And now he melodramatically left the Queen en prise: 13. Kb1?? 0 : 1. A bow that meant resignation.

Chasing that sound

Ennio Morricone: Do you want to play a game?

Alessandro De Rosa: Oh, well, first you have to teach me the moves. [We take a very elegant chess set that stood on the living room table of Morricone’s house]. What would your first move be?

Ennio Morricone: I usually open with the Pawn in front of the Queen, so I probably would do it, although one time a great chess player such as Stefano Tatai advised me to always open with e2-e4, a signature tune which much reminds me of basso continuo.

Italian composer follows recent Oscar win with deal for compilation album Morricone 60, to be performed with Czech National Symphony Orchestra

At 87 years old, most musicians might be thinking of putting their feet up and taking stock of their career… but not Ennio Morricone. The Italian composer, famous for his film scores, has just announced a new deal with Decca Records, celebrating six decades of music making. The deal comes off the back of Morricone’s first ever Oscar win, which he won in February for his soundtrack to Quentin Tarantino’s western The Hateful Eight. [Read more].
