Thoughts on a Rainy Day

Istanbul, Turkey: A woman shelters herself from rain with the Turkish flag during a demonstration in front of the Consulate General of the Netherlands. The Dutch Embassy in Ankara and Consulate in Istanbul have been sealed off for security reasons, after Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu was banned by the Dutch government from attending a rally on Saturday in Rotterdam and tensions between the two countries exploded in vitriolic protests. More than 1,500 university deans asked to resign and 257 PM’s office staff dismissed, with 35,000 public servants now affected

Turkey has escalated its purge of government officials in the aftermath of the failed coup, with about 35,000 public servants affected by the end of the day despite a government spokesman insisting that the crackdown was being carried out in accordance with the rule of law.
In the latest developments on Tuesday, the government fired more than 15,000 employees at the education ministry, sacked 257 officials at the prime minister’s office and 492 clerics at the directorate for religious affairs. Additionally, more than 1,500 university deans were asked to resign.
It followed the firing of nearly 8,800 policemen, and the arrests of 6,000 soldiers, 2,700 judges and prosecutors, dozens of governors, and more than 100 generals – or just under one-third of the general corps. Some 20 news websites critical of the government have also been blocked. [Read more].

The Last Days on Mars

The Turkish president has said he has proof that Russia is involved in the illegal oil trade with Isil in Syria as he attacked Russia’s claims that Ankara buys oil from Isil.
After Russian military chiefs publicly accused the Turkish government of funnelling millions of dollars in illicit oil revenues to Isil terrorists in Syria and Iraq, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan condemned as “immoral” Russian claims that his own family was importing oil from the jihadists.
“We have the proof in our hands. We will reveal it to the world”, Mr. Erdoğan said in a televised address in Ankara. [Read more].

At a briefing today the Deputy Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation Anatoly Ivanovich Antonov unveiled satellite image proof that Turkey is benefiting from ISIS oil trade and vehemently accused Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s family of being involved in the “criminal business”. “We know the price of Erdoğan’s words. Turkish leaders won’t step down and they won’t acknowledge anything even if their faces are smeared with the stolen oil”, Antonov said.
Instead, Erdoğan denied any involvement in oil trade with the ISIS, and said earlier that he would resign if Russia prove its accusations.

Business ethics

[Turkish presidential spokesman, İbrahim Kalın,] quoted President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan as saying to France 24 news channel on Thursday that “had we known it was a Russian plane, we may have acted differently”.
“But this does not change the fact that as a NATO member, Turkey has the right to defend its land and airspace against any violations. Turkish airspace is also NATO airspace”, Kalin wrote.
Erdoğan’s spokesman also touched on claims that Turkey supports Daesh and buys oil from the extremist group, calling the accusations “part of a smear campaign that has no foundation”.
“Those who have made such claims have yet to produce a single piece of concrete evidence. Instead, they narrate anecdotal stories with references to unnamed persons and unspecified locations”.
“But what we know for sure is the fact that both the U.S. and the EU have sanctioned key people for buying oil from Daesh on behalf of the [Bashar] Assad regime”.
“They include Syrian businessman George Haswani, Mudalal Khuri, a Syrian banker, and Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, a wealthy Russian businessman and the president of the World Chess Federation”, he said.

[Read more].

Back in Black
