The Timeless Swan

The Ballet Nacional de Cuba will hold the 26th International Ballet Festival of Havana at Gran Teatro de La Habana Alicia Alonso in Havana, Cuba from October 28 to November 6, 2018. The 26th edition of the festival will be dedicated to celebrating the 70th anniversary of the foundation of the host company. One of the highlights of the program will be the great season planned to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the stage début of Cuba’s legendary prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso in the classic Giselle, which is expected to be taken over by Cuban and foreign figures.

Although blind and frail, still today at 97 years old, she keeps running the Ballet Nacional de Cuba: “Now that I am no longer on stage, I keep dancing through my dancers. Some feel the duty of contributing to the company, some others not so much, but somehow they all belong to our roots”. Photo: Jonathan Ernst/Reuters.
