A Rapid and Blitz Open Chess Tournament to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Andrey Sheptytsky – Metropolitan Archbishop of Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church from 1901 until his death in 1944 – was held yesterday in the Auditorium of the “Lviv Polytechnic” National University.
Many renowned International Masters and Grandmasters on the stage: Anna Muzychuk, Adrian Bohdanovych Mikhalchishin, Oleg Mikhailovich Romanishin, Yaroslav Zherebukh, Ołeksandr Sułypa, Mikhailo Oleksienko, brothers Andrey and Yuri Volkov, Alexander Ipatov, Alexander Areshchenko, and Margeir Pétursson. Women’s World Chess Champion Mariya Muzychuk had to cancel her participation in extremis, being abroad. As compensation for the audience, in the first game her gifted sister Anna Muzychuk defeated the celebrated Grandmaster and Chairman of FIDE Trainers’ Commission Adrian Bohdanovych Mikhalchishin. After a playoff with Yuri Volkov, Yaroslav Zherebukh finally emerged as the sole winner of the tournament. |
