13th World Chess Champion Garry Kimovich Kasparov announced the death of his mother December 25 in a concise tweet: “With great sorrow I share the news of the passing of my mother, Klara Shagenovna Kasparova. My role model, my greatest champion, my wise counsel, and the strongest person I will ever know. I love you, Mama”. Similarly to other mothers in chess history, Mrs. Kasparova mentored his son far beyond his professional carreer, always accompanying him even when they had to part from each other for safety reasons.
