九零后 (Post-90s)

侯逸凡 (Hóu Yìfán), born in 1994, was the youngest woman ever to earn the title of Grandmaster (aged 14) and the youngest ever to win the Women’s World Chess Championship (at 16).
Today, she is a four-time Woman’s World Chess Champion and the unrivaled world’s woman No. 1.
Who can think that such a genius girl was born from a common family in 兴化 (Xīnghuà), 江苏 (Jiāngsū)?
At 5, when 侯逸凡 (Hóu Yìfán) showed interest in board games, her parents decided to make her study chess.
Her mother quit her nurse’s job and superintended her daughter’s studies. Her father stopped drinking and smoking in order to save the school fees, and rented the family house as he temporarily moved to a relative’s apartment. Young 侯逸凡 (Hóu Yìfán) knew that, deep in her heart, she couldn’t disappoint her parents’ expectations!
As a family which spent all its time and money on a girl’s growth, her family was inevitably shadowed by other people’s doubts.
侯逸凡 (Hóu Yìfán)’s parents were doubting, too: “Chess can be a hobby, and also a career, but it can’t be everything”, they said.
Money and success can’t protect anyone forever.
Hence, 侯逸凡 (Hóu Yìfán)’s parents always helped her to balance her life between chess and academic school.
侯逸凡 (Hóu Yìfán) not only won four times the Women’s World Chess Championship, but also achieved highest academic honours at university.
Today 侯逸凡 (Hóu Yìfán) has accepted the appointment as a full Professor at 深圳大学 (Shēnzhèn University), she also being the youngest professor ever in the history of the campus.
When people praise her for her talent, 侯逸凡 (Hóu Yìfán) stays clear and calm: “Of course innate talent is important, but it’s not sufficient alone. Success depends most upon hard work and dedication”.
She is mature, quiet, independent, confident, and strong, all of which stem from the positive influence of her parents.
