Tomorrow Never Knows

China’s diving team taking part as special guests to 天天向上 (Day Day Up), Húnán TV’s popular talk-variety show. The special was recorded today in 长沙 (Chángshā), 湖南省 (Húnán province), China, and will be broadcasted tomorrow. Of course, it couldn’t miss the “replay” of the “improvised” marriage proposal (accompanied by an engagement ring) made by 秦凯 (Qín Kǎi) to 何姿 (Hé Zī) at Rio Olympics. Photo: sports.sina.com.cn.

吴敏霞 (Wú Mǐnxiá) (R.) also seemed to enjoy the show. She briefly recalled the not-so-easy start of her 18-year diving carreer: “As a matter of fact, my body was not suitable for diving, but I persevered”. Then she spoke out about her fiancé 張效誠 (Zhāng Xiàochéng), with whom she was engaged since 2010 – conquered by his voice – but secretely, until August 9, when she decided to announce her romance urbi et orbi. 知道不知道

Concurrently with the 15th anniversary celebration of the national beauty brand Natural Church CHANDO – already official partner of China’s diving superstars – held at 上海 (Shànghăi) World Expo Exhibition and Convention Centre on September 5, 2016, cosmetics leader Garan Group Chairman 郑春影 (Zhèng Chūn-yǐng) rewarded China’s Olympic diving team with ¥1,000,000 元/圆 (yuán) (about €133,110 €uros) in order to support their future goals, from now until 2020 Summer Olympics. 吴敏霞 (Wú Mǐnxiá), interviewed by 刘艾林 (Liú Àilín) for 上海专电 (Shànghăi News), appeared a bit more fatalistic about the early retirement issue: “I just want a good rest. I don’t know whether I will retire or not. I don’t know whether I will participate in the 2017 World Aquatics Championships or not. When I’ll know it, I’ll tell you”, she said. 嘟嘴 (Dūzuǐ) means duck face (idem to say a a pronounced pout in which the lips are thrust outwards, usually made by a person posing for a picture). The word 萌 (mèng) comes from Japanese animation, and is used to say something is very cute. 卖萌 (màiméng) (literally, to sell cuteness), means someone is pretending to be cute.

While awarded a silver medal for her second-place finish in the women’s 3m springboard final today, China’s diver 何姿 (Hé Zī) received a marriage proposal (accompanied by an engagement ring) from her longtime fiancé in what will remain one of the highlights of the Rio Olympics. Chinese diver 秦凯 (Qín Kǎi), who won silver in the men’s 3m springboard in London, got down on one knee to pop the question live worldwide after his fiancée and her teammate 施廷懋 (Shī Tíngmào) took the top two spots in today’s final.
