Suomen Shakki, No. 8, 1978, p. 298, gives – in order to prevent ... Ng6-f4 – 26. Nf5 (Δ h2-h4). Another modus operandi could be 26. Rad1 (or 26. Rfd1), in order to double the Rooks on the d-file. 26. ... Nf4! 27. Nf5 g6 28. Qg5 Rxc4! 29. bxc4 f6! 30. Nh6+ Kg7 31. Nf5+ Kf7. Paoli disdains perpetual check (31. ... Kg8 32. Nh6+). What a fighter! 32. Qh6 Kg8! After 32. ... gxf5 33. Qxh7+ White has nothing more than perpetual check, but Paoli hopes for something more! 33. Ne3 Qb6! 34. Rfe1 Rxc4 35. Kh2 Rd4 36. Red1 Ba6? Correct was 36. ... Qd6 and if 37. Nc4 then 37. ... Qc7 38. Nxa5 Qc2! 39. Qxf4! Rxd1 40. Qxf6! Rxa1 41. Qe6+ Kg7 42. Qe7+ with perpetual check. 37. Rac1 Nd3? The losing move, but after 37. ... Qd6 38. h5! Nxh5 39. Nd5! (threatening both Rc1-c7 and Rc1-c6) Black would be doomed anyway.

38. Rxd3! Or 38. Nd5! Rxd5 39. exd5 Nxc1 40. Qxc1+-. 38. ... Rxd3 39. Nd5! Rxd5 40. exd5+- a4. If 40. ... Bb7 then 41. Rd1! (Suomen Shakki gives 41. h5 g5 42. Rc6, but then 42. ... Qd4! 43. Rxf6 Qh4+ would ensure Black perpetual check) 41. ... Qd6 42. Qe3! with decisive penetration. 41. Rc6 Qa7 42. Rxf6 Qa8 43. Rd6 b3 (43. ... Qc8 44. Qg5+-) 44. Rd7 1 : 0.
