A Midsummer Night’s Dream

She changed three diving partners, she took part in four Olympic Games, she won five gold medals. And yet Diving Queen 吴敏霞 (Wú Mǐnxiá), 31, is still on stage, aiming for new wuthering heights. As she told in an interview, “There is no place for suffering in a life whose goals are determined by a dream”.
Not everyone knows, in fact, that 吴敏霞 (Wú Mǐnxiá) suffered from congenital anemia and congenital hip-joint disease. With her hemoglobin dropping too low, she was constantly exposed to waist/hips hurt, which, with the advance of age, became more and more acute, till her waist and legs hurt too.
Furthemore, her career was long enough for knowing the most common and most severe springboard diving injuries too, which required a great deal of overtime work for both physicians and acupuncturists. It would have been enough to renounce to her fifth Long March. Instead, she wanted to challenge herself once again. Till victory. Above pictured are 吴敏霞 (Wú Mǐnxiá) and 施廷懋 (Shī Tíngmào) at the women’s synchronized 3-meter springboard gold medal ceremony at Rio Olympics. All photos: sports.sohu.com.
